Mystery.org is setting out to give teachers easy access to affordable supplies, to ensure that teaching our lessons truly is an open-and-go experience. We’re looking for an Operations Specialist to join our new Supplies team, providing both internal and external-facing support as we build out the systems and processes that will drive this initiative.
This role will have a significant impact on the experience of teachers using our curriculum product, Mystery Science, across the US. You’ll be responsible for integrating the feedback we receive - both from our customers and our vendors - and using it to help shape our processes going forward. We’re looking for someone who is excited to help us translate user feedback into ways we can improve and refine our processes. You will help represent the needs of our customers and reflect our desire to help teachers across the US.
We’re looking for someone who is highly organized and has a good eye for detail. You don’t need to have an advanced understanding of Excel, but you’re someone who is confident in your ability to accurately track a large volume of numbers across multiple documents. You’re able to keep very different tasks moving forward, making sure nothing falls between the cracks. As Mystery Science occupies both the Education and Technology spaces, we hope to find someone who is quick to learn new platforms and is excited by the internal tools we’re building.
Do you enjoy coordinating with a range of people - from internal teams to vendors and customers?
Do you have exceptional communication skills?
Do you have a demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and work towards clear deadlines?
Are you able to plan and manage a process from start to finish?
Do you pride yourself on your attention to detail?
Are you comfortable working independently when necessary?
Do you love to help figure out the best solution to new problems?
This is an opportunity to help fix science education for the next generation. On any given day, here are some of the things you will be working on as an Operations Specialist:
Manage our database of supplies, ensuring accuracy throughout our system
Conduct quality control of physical supplies and plan for changes with our Content Team
Help maintain a strong working relationship with our fulfillment vendors
Assist our customers with their orders, tracking shipping and resolving unexpected delivery issues
Learn from customers and internal teams to help refine and improve our processes
Create robust supply documentation
You’ll have a lot of opportunity scope to grow, long-term. The more you learn about our supplies and learn about how our Content Team works, the more you can contribute to supply development and help grow our distribution system. We are headquartered in San Francisco and this position is based in our office.
Package & Perks
If you’re looking for the basics:
$4M in funding from leading education investors (and we’re already profitable)
Equity in a high-growth company
401K, health care, vacation
Customers who love us
…but the real perks of working at Mystery Science are the quality of the people on your team and the problem we’re solving. Those things are what bring us to work every day.
We started Mystery.org to create better explanations for every question children have about the world. We began with the 150 most common science questions that children ask teachers. We call this collection Mystery Science. Last year, more than 4 million children used Mystery Science in 50% of U.S. elementary schools. In an industry that is plagued by long sales cycle and high barriers to entry, we’ve sold thousands schools without a single sales person. We’re backed by a great group of investors including Y Combinator, Learn Capital, and Reach Capital.
We’re now moving on to all the other questions children have that they’ll never learn in school. In the last 18 months we received over 500,000 questions from children eager for better explanations of the world. Now we’re creating video explanations for every question. You can think of this like a visual Wikipedia for kids.
Our goal is to create a generation of better thinkers. We think this is the most important problem to solve in the world today.
Meet The Team
On your first day at Mystery.org, you’ll meet a team of people who are passionate about science and teaching, and who each love their respective crafts. Our co-founder, Doug Peltz, began by assembling the best science explainers in the world from the Exploratorium, Klutz, LePort Schools, Stanford, and The Field Museum. Our focus on people extends to every area of the company. We’re building the team that we want to work with.
We are a product-driven company. The core of what we do is create an incredible product that our customers love. We test every science activity, observe every explanation with children, and talk with teachers constantly. We take our responsibility to envision the future of learning very seriously and we want to bring the best science education to every child in the world. This is an opportunity to join a startup and transform science education for the next generation of children.
